Terminology and Sections of an Upholstered ChairTotal Leather Solutions > Leather & Vinyl Furniture Tips and Fact > Sections of an Upholstered Chair Whether your furniture is upholstered with leather or some other type of material for covering there are standard terms that professional upholsterers use to speak about the cover of the upholstered furniture. The diagram below of a wing chair identifies those terms. Most fully upholstered furniture whether leather or fabric will have the same sections, with the possible exception of the wings. More custom pieces of furniture will have additional pieces called boxing at the tops of the arms and chair back. The upholstered pieces of the chair that surround you when you sit are called the inside sections which are tacked or stapled to the frame in a well thought out sequence that hides the hardware fasteners. Outside upholstery pieces: the front seat, outside arm, outside wing and outside back are what is called blind tacked to adjacent material pieces. The curving front arm panels are attached to the inside and outside arm with a combination of sewing and blind tacking. The cushioned sections of an upholstered chair are; top, bottom and boxing are sewed together and used as a case for the stuffing. Hidden underneath the cushion is a square of durable fabric that covers the deck or top of the chair seat (decking).
